Terrestrial Area: Europe Aquatic Area: Europe-Inland Water Research ActivityOur studies confirmed that the presence of ruddy ducks in Europe is compatible with a human-mediated introduction to United Kingdom in the 1950s (Munoz-Fuentes et al., Molecular Ecology, 2006). We also studied the hybridization process in Spain between ruddy ducks and white-headed ducks, confirming that first-generation hybrids are fertile and they reproduce in the wild with both species, therefore constituting a threat to the long-term survival of the white-headed duck (Muñoz-Fuentes et al., Molecular Ecology, in press). |
